What does February mean to you? The bitter chill of winter? Valentine’s Day? The Super Bowl? The Winter Guest Speaker Series?

For many, February means Black History Month, a time for all Americans to remember or learn about the history and contributions of African Americans since the first enslaved Africans arrived on American shores in 1619. It is a history rich with innovation, courage, resilience, and remarkable talent.

When I was first saved, I knew that I wanted to reach as many people as I could with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and eventually, I knew that I wanted to pastor a multicultural church that would reflect and celebrate the diversity that is America. God has blessed Bridgeway with people from over 60 different nations, and we continue to grow our international footprint.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen our country divided over race, political affiliation, and even vaccine status! But as I have always said, “comprehension begins with conversation.”

Bridgeway, I encourage you to engage with the culture around you, especially across cultures, and have conversations around tough topics with people with whom you feel safe. Often we find that we have far more in common than we originally thought.

I encourage you to activate the “learner” in you and learn about the rich history of African Americans and our contribution to every aspect of American life.

I encourage you to do the work of a gracist and lift, cover, share, honor, stand with, consider, and celebrate with the people in your life who look different than you.

I encourage you to celebrate the diversity that is within Bridgeway and America, not just in February, but in every month of the year.

I encourage you to join me in March when I will be participating in the Great Sermon Conversations on Sundays live at 7:00 pm online. Remember, comprehension begins with conversation!
